Week Three- Part Two of the Rhapsody Vest Pattern

Good Afternoon Friends.  I hope you are enjoying the April CAL so far.  This month we are making the Rhapsody Vest.  Last week we made the bottom section of your vest.  You got to choose the length that you wanted your finished vest to be.  This week we are going to work on the sleeves, assemble our vests and choose our own finishing options.

First things first.  I want you to make sure that your vest is the length you want, from under your arms down.  I also want to make sure that your last row was a Row Three repeat.  That is the row where you placed 3dc in each ch2 space from the previous row.

If your vest ends on a different row than you'll either need to add a row, or two, or take a row, or two, away.

Now that we are all on the same page, lets get started.

First you'll need to grab something to mark your stitches with.  If you don't have stitch markers, you can use a bobby pin, a safety pin, a different color strand of yarn; just something that will mark your stitches for you.

Place your finished piece in front of you with the bottom towards you (down), and the WS facing; the ch-3 you began the last row with, will be on your left side.

Now you are going to place stitch markers in the following four stitches- working from the right to left.

A- 19 (22, 25, 25, 28, 31)
B- 28 (31, 34, 37, 40, 43)
C- 70 (79, 88, 97, 106, 115)
D- 79 (88, 97, 109, 118, 127)

Once you have placed your markers, you will begin crocheting.  You will begin working on the front right panel (this will be the front left panel for the 2x size)

Row 1:  Attach yarn, by sl st, in the top of the first st of the previous row.  Ch 3 and dc in the same st, skip one dc, dc in each st until you reach the st BEFORE the marked stitch (A), skip one st, 2dc in the marked st, ch 3, turn <19 (22, 25, 25, 28, 31) dc>

ASSEMBLY

Now that you have completed the top section of the vest, it's time to assemble it.  You are going to lay the vest down flat, bottom towards you (down) and the last row you worked will have the right side facing out, for small, medium, large, 1x and 3x (ending tail to your left); for 2x the last row worked will be away from you (ending tail to your right).

Fold the two front panels in to line up with the back panel.  There will be 5 (5, 5, 11, 11, 11) unworked stitches at the top center of the back panel once the front panels are folded over.

Seam the shoulders evenly.  I prefer to use the mattress stitch seam.  You can find a great tutorial HERE.  When you seam, you will be working with both wrong side panels out.  The right sides will be facing, on the inside.  This way when you are done, and turn the piece inside out, the right side will be facing.

Once you are finished assembling your vest, you will sew in your ends and move on to finishing.

FINISHING

You have three different options for finishing.  You can add any finish to any length.

You can either choose to leave the bottom as it is

You can choose to add fringe

Or you can choose to add a border of the same stitch used in the vest with a fun picot added.

For Option A, you just leave it as it is, and viola, you are done.

For Option B I added fringe every 3 sts at the bottom of the vest. I added to strands about 15" long.  Once you add it as fringe, it will double and it will be about 7" long, finished.  HERE is a great tutorial for adding fringe to a crochet project.

For Option C.  Working along the bottom edge of your vest (opposite side of FDC row), work rows as follows.

Row 1:  Dc in first dc (same st as turning ch-3), *skip 2 dc, [dc, ch 2, dc] in same st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, skip 2dc, 2dc in last dc, ch 3, turn

Row 2:  Dc in first dc (same st as turning ch-3), *skip 2dc, 3dc in next ch-2 sp, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, skip 2dc, 2dc in last dc, ch 3, turn

Row 3:  Dc in first dc (same st as turning ch-3), skip next dc, dc in each dc across until 2-dc remain, skip next dc, 2dc in last dc, ch 3, turn

Row 4:  Dc in first dc (same st as turning ch-3), *skip 2 dc, [dc, picot*, dc] in same st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, skip 2dc, 2dc in last dc.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

*Picot
Chain 3, sl st into first chain- one picot made

Your Rhapsody Vest is now complete.  I hope you enjoyed the April CAL and I look forward to being your host again in June.
